Lt. Gov. Bustamante's insurance industry campaign
contributions highlight a bigger political problem, says
Green Party candidate for State Insurance Commissioner
SANTA CRUZ -- Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante's pocketing of contributions from the
insurance industry -- when he's now running for Insurance Commissioner --
should indicate to voters that state politics are in "dire need of change,"
according to Larry Cafiero, the Green Party's candidate for Insurance
Commissioner.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that Bustamante, the leading
Democratic candidate for Insurance Commissioner, received more than
$120,000 in campaign donations from insurance companies. The Chronicle also
reported he and his top aides also accepted meals and travel expenses, some
of which the lieutenant governor failed to report on disclosure statements,
according to the Chronicle.
"The acceptance of campaign contributions from the insurance industry by
the leading Democrat in the Insurance Commissioner's race outlines a facet
of state politics that is in dire need of change," said Cafiero.
To guarantee that the Green Party serves the interest of the electorate
rather than corporate interests, Green candidates no corporate donations.
"When the Green Party takes no corporate donations, it ensures that the
people, not the corporate interests, are represented in Sacramento when
they elect Greens on any level," Cafiero said. "Perhaps the biggest
challenge California voters now face in the Insurance Commissioner's race
is electing the candidate who can truly represent the people."
Cafiero, 48, is the liaison to the Secretary of State's office for the
Green Party of California. A daily newspaper editor by profession, he also
serves on the county council of the Green Party of Santa Cruz County.
