Issue: Should insurance companies pay for doctor-prescribed medical marijuana?

There's only one answer here -- 'YES': The legislation on the books that was passed when voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 215 has a provision, "To encourage the federal and state governments to implement a plan to provide for the safe and affordable distribution of marijuana to all patients in medical need of marijuana."

In an ideal world -- and the following is a position that this campaign takes -- medical marijuana would be freely available to those who required its use, especially to those who are suffering from terminal illnesses and would benefit from its use. Meanwhile, until we reach that goal, this campaign stands with the terminally ill and their care providers in making this pledge going forward to November:

Whenever and wherever medical marijuana is prescribed by a physician, it must be covered by insurance companies like any other medicine, both by private insurance providers or by public insurance providers like Medi-Cal or Medicare.

As Insurance Commissioner, Larry Cafiero pledges to make this issue a top priority during his term in office.
